SUMMARY:1\,001 Nights
DESCRIPTION:A THOUSAND AND ONE NIGHTS – Rimsky-Korsakov wrote the classical music’s most famous foray into the world of exoticism. His Scheherazade is clad in luxurious orchestral colors. – the fairy tales of the One Thousand and One Nights have never been told with more vibrancy! \nWhen you want to take a fantastic journey into the Far Far Away lands\, there is hardly a better vessel than the orchestra. Symphonic music is peerlessly evocative. Just consider this description from our featured composition: the ship breaks up against a cliff surmounted by a bronze horseman. Now imagine the full orchestra playing that scene! \nRecreating the legend of the Sultan Schahriar and the Sultana Scheherazade\, the Russian Romantic composer Rimsky-Korsakov wrote the classical music’s most famous foray into the world of exoticism. His Scheherazade is clad in luxurious orchestral colors. The majestic tutti sections are intertwined with numerous instrumental solos. This is a perfect family outing – the fairy tales of the One Thousand and One Nights have never been told with more vibrancy!

SUMMARY:Dance!
DESCRIPTION:The Queens Symphony Orchestra will present the second in its series of Family Concerts titled “Dance!” conducted by the company’s Music Director Martin Majkut on Sunday afternoon\, May 6\, 2018 at 3:00 PM in LeFrak Hall at the Kupferberg Center for the Arts at Queens College. \nRepertoire includes Dances from Three Cornered Hat by deFalla\, Valse Triste\, by Sibelius and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7. \n“Dance and movement are music’s closest cousins” states Martin Majkut\, QSO’s Music Director. “On May 6\, we offer three different takes on how classical composers used dance as an inspiration for their creations”. \n“Our excursion starts in Spain with a selection of dances from Falla’s ballet Three Cornered Hat. This music has a strong Andalusian flavor\, mixing Spanish and Arabic influences. You will have no trouble spotting several spots where the orchestra sounds like a flamenco guitar”.\n“A contemplative mood sets in for our second piece. Finish composer Sibelius wrote Valse triste as a brief meditation on the last moments on the Earth. An ailing elderly woman raises from her deathbed and dances with the crowd of invisible guests. Sibelius employs very simple means\, intimate orchestral forces and unadorned musical phrasing to create an atmosphere that is retrospective without being sentimental”.\n“For his Symphony No. 7\, German composer Beethoven distilled the elements of dance to their very essence. The entire piece vibrates with sharp rhythmic motives that propel the symphony forward. The first movement starts with a slow introduction but soon the pace picks up and does not let go until the final note. The third movement is breathtakingly quick and\, for the most part\, very soft\, with unexpected accents creating moments of true exhilaration. And the fourth movement is one endless whirlwind! For contrast\, the slow second movement proceeds with a measured pace\, giving us an ample time to enjoy one of the most beautiful harmonic progressions in all of music”. \nTickets are free to the public. Reservations can be made at www.universe.com Seating will be on a first come-first-served basis.

SUMMARY:Fancy Free & Enigmatic
DESCRIPTION:“Fancy Free and Enigmatic” opens with the salute to Leonard Bernstein\, for his 100th birthday year with Three Dances from his first major Broadway hit\, Fancy Free. Next we will hear Mozart’s 23rd piano concerto. One could say that Mozart lived a “fancy- free” lifestyle and he also remains one the great musical enigmas. Our soloist for the concerto is the Israeli pianist Alon Goldstein\, an impeccable Mozart interpreter. In the second half\, we’ll feature Elgar’s Enigma Variations – with the immensely popular Nimrod movement – is a colorful musical sketchbook of the composer’s friends.

SUMMARY:Destination: Italy!
DESCRIPTION:The Queens Symphony Orchestra presents the second in its series of Masterworks Concerts titled “Destination Italy” conducted by the company’s Music Director Martin Majkut on Friday evening\, March 23\, 2018 at 7:30 PM at Flushing Town Hall. Repertoire includes Schubert’s Overture in the Italian Style\, Stravinsky’s Pulcinella and Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons featuring violinist Kinga Augustyn. \nTickets are free to the public. Reservations are Recommended. Seating will be on a first-come-first-served basis. \nAbout the Repertoire\nFor centuries\, Italy was the musicians’ Mecca. Italians brought the art of polyphonic singing to its highest peak and discovered the power of melody for the world”. Franz Schubert\, known as one of music’s greatest melodists\, had never been to Italy but he felt the bond with his spiritual ancestors on the other side of the Alps. Overture in Italian Style is his homage to the style of music that is mighty in its simplicity. \nStravinsky’s Pulcinella\, composed in the “neo-classical style” and features one of the characters from Italian commedia dell’arte. Stravinsky took early 18th century tunes and modernized them as he saw fit. This music is both old-fashioned and modern\, realistic in one moment and distorted like a portrait by Picasso immediately thereafter. \nAnd finally\, we get a true Italian! The Four Seasons is a set of four violin concertos\, one for each season. Antonio Vivaldi created a work with irresistible melodies and a violin part that is not only virtuosic but also tells a story.
