Family Concert Series

Through the Family Series, the QSO presents 3-4 concerts per year at LeFrak Concert Hall on the campus of CUNY Queens College. At these concerts, music from around the world is presented in an exciting and informative program at a world-class concert hall. These concerts are not only an excellent introduction to classical music for the young, but are an amazing opportunity for both new and seasoned orchestral music-lovers to witness a monumental live music experience free of charge; a rare occurrence today.

The Family Series Concerts were born out of founder David Katz’s mission of bringing great music to the young people of the Borough of Queens, and were created as the “Concerts for Girls and Boys” in 1956, remaining under that name until moving to their current title in 2005. The Family Concert Series serves as the QSO’s flagship program and is the orchestra’s longest running concert series. These programs often include the New York City or world premiere of compositions and the composer of the composition are very often in attendance.

The programs are just the right length, running approximately 90-minutes on selected Sunday afternoons. Through this program, the QSO is continuing its mission of educating families and individuals of all ages about the universal value and necessity of orchestral music by exhibiting works by new and well-known composers in a welcoming setting that includes interaction with the music director and/or conductor, as well as QSO musicians, prior to and post-performance. The patron is given the opportunity during a pre-concert talk to learn more about the nature and history of the pieces being presented and leaves with a better understanding of the featured composition.

We believe this is an ideal time for the entire family to enjoy some of the finest classical music in the world performed by our orchestra, as well as an uncommon opportunity to expose the next generation of Queens residents to classical music at no cost. Please join us this coming season.
